Horse healed of colic

On Easter morning in 2016, I went out to feed my horses and discovered Lucy (my husband’s beloved mare) lying on the ground, covered in wet mud and unable to eat her breakfast. I recognized the symptoms as those of an advanced state of colic, a condition that would have commonly been considered untreatable at that point.

I called a Christian Science practitioner, and he said he would begin giving Christian Science treatment right away. As I drove to church that morning, I was also praying in order to calm my thought and destroy the fear that had crept in.

I realized that this fear was based on knowledge I had gained in my work as a horse trainer at a large training barn. So I thought, “I’m going to have to cut that tree of false material knowledge down.” I needed to replace it with spiritual reasoning, grounded in the fact that God, Spirit, sustains, loves, and maintains all His creatures.

I knew it didn’t matter how long I had believed in the lie of a horse subject to material laws of disease and malfunction, the light of Truth would immediately dispel the darkness of that belief. I had to yield to the Christ, which is always coming to human consciousness to dispel the misconceptions of the carnal mind, which mocks God’s allness and goodness—and which St. Paul said “is enmity against God” (Romans 8:7).

I knew the practitioner, my husband, and I were all praying to see through the alarming picture of a sick horse to the spiritual reality that an all-powerful, good God doesn’t make an ill and suffering creature. And I affirmed that Christian Science treatment is effective.

During the day when it appeared the horse was getting worse, the practitioner said we would pray to understand the spiritual significance of Jesus’ healing command to rise up and walk (see John 5:8).

My husband and I continued to pray to overcome fear of the symptoms. We talked about how our horses had been healed in the past. We had seen so many proofs of God’s healing truth in our lives that we worked to let those truths fill our consciousness, leaving no room for the mesmerizing picture suggesting that God was not on the scene or that omnipotent God allows evil to triumph.

When I later went to check on Lucy, she was standing and drinking some water, a sign of improvement. Both my husband and I rejoiced at the evidence of the effectiveness of realizing the truth of God’s creation. However, later in the day the condition seemed to reach a crisis point. After staying in the barn and comforting her and sharing that God loves her, we left Lucy covered with a blanket and lying next to her horse friend, Raven.

We went back to the house and called the practitioner again, who maintained what we had been declaring together all day, that the horse was a perfect, spiritual idea of God, protected and loved by God, and this meant there was no room for suffering. When I returned to the barn an hour later, imagine my joy and gratitude when I found Lucy standing and peacefully eating grass, completely recovered.

I learned many lessons from this experience that continue to bless me. I learned that there is no “point of no return.” Lucy’s legs—legs that had been too weak to stand on—were not even shaking; they were perfectly strong. Nothing had to go in or come out of her system to make her well; there was absolutely no recovery time either.

I saw how the practitioner didn’t give up when things seemed to get very close to “the end,” but instead stood firm and redoubled his efforts to see clear evidence of the truth he was holding to. On a day which commemorates Christ Jesus’ resurrection, what a lovely Easter gift!
