Stomach cancer healed
by Vinnie Royer Bennett
from the Christian Science Sentinel, October 13, 1956
Christian Science came into my experience many years ago, when I was longing for greater spiritual understanding. I was a member of an orthodox church, but my religion brought me neither comfort nor healing; so I turned to the study of the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. As my spiritual understanding increased, I experienced a greater sense of harmony.
Later I suffered from nervous indigestion. I began to lose weight and manifested extreme weakness. One day, after months of suffering, I had an internal hemorrhage, and at the insistence of my husband I was rushed to a hospital for an examination. X-rays showed an advanced stage of cancer of the stomach. The verdict was given that I had only a few hours to live.
I was asked what my last request was, and I said, “I want Christian Science, and I know I shall live.” A practitioner was called, and help was lovingly given at once. I felt better immediately, left the hospital, and ate dinner with my family that evening, much to their amazement.
Improvement continued, and as I studied the textbook more earnestly, the truths in it were illumined in a way I had never known before. I felt God’s presence, and the sense of time did not enter my consciousness.
When I mentioned this experience to the practitioner she quoted this passage from Science and Health: “Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies. Christian Science acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with Truth. It changes the secretions, expels humors, dissolves tumors, relaxes rigid muscles, restores carious bones to soundness. The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind” (pg.162).
My daughter, who is not a student of Christian Science, came to see me and would not believe the healing was complete until I consented to go to a clinic for an examination. This was done, and after a thorough X-ray examination the verdict given by a specialist was that I was in splendid condition. There has never been any stomach trouble since, and that was thirteen years ago.
As a result of this healing, I have relied on Christian Science ever since to meet my needs. Gradually false traits of character have been replaced by spiritual qualities, and my life is happy, useful, and abundant.
